Building Confidence Through Martial Arts
Martial Arts have long been known for building confidence, creating strong individuals who can take the life skills they develop in their training and apply them to everyday challenges. The life skills developed at KFMA include integrity, perseverance, respect, self-discipline and self-control. The benefits of these life skills, developed through training, include an increase in confidence, courtesy, and self-esteem.
Confidence is built gradually over time by success and achievement. Our teaching is guided by the principal of positive correction, and setting small, short-term goals that students can reach with a little hard work and the support of their instructors and fellow students.
Why Our Students Try Martial Arts to Build Confidence
Many of the kids who have started at KFMA simply did not enjoy team sports, as those typically favor the natural, superstar athlete. Kids who are a little slower to develop or don’t pick up quickly can be easily overlooked or left on the sidelines and given little coaching. Many of our adults never had the opportunity to participate in athletics when they were younger, and they are surprised that by stepping gently outside of their comfort zone, they are able to learn and excel in the Martial Arts. For this reason, many of our adults train alongside their children.
How You’ll Start Building Your Confidence
At KFMA, a beginner White Belt will be taught from the first day how to perform a few basic kicks and hand techniques, and they will also begin to work on their fitness level. All of these are taught with safety in mind and are based on the individual’s personal abilities. These skills will be retaught and refined over the following weeks, with students earning (not simply given) stripes as they progress to testing for the next level belt. Each student learns and progresses at his or her own level and based on their own abilities. As students build their physical fitness levels, they are also building confidence!
We have had beginners who could not complete 10 sit-ups when they started, able to do 40 after just six months of training. Achievements like this build self-esteem, and they build confidence to try more challenging tasks inside and outside of the martial arts school.
As students move into the higher ranks of the Color Belts (on their path to the Black Belt ranks), they have built a strong level of confidence in their physical abilities as well as in their ability to handle challenges that earlier would have seemed beyond their reach.
Increases in Confidence Lead to Success
Once a student has developed the skills necessary to test for a higher rank, they will perform their material in front of their instructors in a formalized testing. The confidence to perform well in these testings comes from many hours of preparation and practice, being guided by their instructors. This is the same process that students will use in other areas of their lives (academic and professional) to reach new goals and to achieve success.
Developing confidence is not an instant process, but there is definitely a tried-and-true path to gaining it through the Martial Arts. Once it is developed, this confidence will be ‘worn’ by the individual in all aspects of their lives. The first step is simple… just give us a call and try a class. You’ll be amazed at the support you’ll receive from the amazing students and families that train at KFMA, and by the guidance you receive from our Certified Master Instructors.
