KFMA JANUARY TO APRIL – TAEKWONDO TRAINING VIDEOS
KFMA Taekwondo Training Videos are aligned to work with our testing cycles each year, and each video training article will include the materials for our color belts for a 4-month cycle. At the start of each year, we begin with the curriculum used for our February and April Rank Testings, including traditional Songham Taekwondo Forms, Sparring Combinations, and One-steps (for White through Yellow Belts). The videos below will assist KFMA White through Red belts who wish to practice their material at home to better prepare for class and for the rank tests.
The videos below are broken out into 4 separate rank groups as follows:
*White Belts
* Orange and Yellow Belts
* Camo, Green and Purple Belts
*Blue, Brown and Red Belts
Practicing your material on a regular basis will be begin to build muscle memory, so it is important to make sure that you understand the attributes of the proper techniques as taught by your Certified Master Instructors in class before you start to practice them at home. This will enable you to perform them properly as you start to build muscle memory.
Every basic hand technique will have a defined starting and ending position, as well as rotation and direction of the technique. You will also need to note the proper positioning of the hand and fingers (straight wrists, tight fists, etc.) to ensure that you can execute the technique safely on impact.
Kicks have their own specific attributes, including the proper chamber of the leg, pivoting the standing foot (to avoid knee injuries), body alignment (for power and proper balance), rechambering the leg, and striking with the correct part of the foot (ball, heel, or instep). Once the quality of the kick has been established, speed and power can be developed along with muscle memory, enabling the kick to be thrown quickly in a sparring situation. Targets can be used to further develop accuracy and power.
For a quick look at how to develop your side kick with simple drills you can use at home, please take a look at this article:

Tips for Sparring Combinations
We suggest you first start practicing with the Sparring Combinations videos for your rank, as this will cover the material you will need to perform in order to earn your first knowledge stripe at each color belt rank. The combinations are designed to help you throw smooth, fast and fluid techniques/combinations in sparring; so after you memorize the combinations, try to develop them so they ‘flow’ with speed.
Tips for Songahm Taekwondo Forms
When working on the Songahm Taekwondo Forms, focus on the quality of your stances and techniques should be your primary focus as you first start memorizing the form. Memorization is the first step, but there are many other attributes to work on to make your form ‘perfect.’ These include: Proper Technique, Timing (hand-foot), Power, the Speed of the individual techniques, Balance, Eye Contact/Focus, Rhythm/Fluidity and Intensity. Once you have memorized the form, we suggest that you focus on one of these attributes each time that you practice.
The forms and techniques were designed to build on the physical foundations developed over time, so please do not practice material that is above your rank. As always, should you have any questions, please ask your instructor.
