KFMA Teaches Self-Discipline and Improves Focus
KFMA teaches self-discipline and improves focus for their students through the structured curriculum and training offered in our family martial arts classes. These skills, self-discipline and focus, help children to perform better academically as they learn to listen better, pay attention to details, and to stay on task.
What is Self-Discipline
In simple terms, discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, or making sure that somebody does something in a specific manner. However, self-discipline is when the individual has learned how to perform tasks that must be done, and then does them without being told.
This is frequently the difference between having a mundane job that requires a great deal of supervision, versus having a job that allows more flexibility in tasks and thought as the individual can be trusted to perform.
How KFMA Teaches Self-Discipline and Improves Focus
When students first begin training at KFMA, they quickly learn the basic courtesies and training expectations inherent in martial arts training. Respect and courtesy are paramount attributes in the school, and learning these is the first step in martial discipline. As students become more comfortable with the training regimen, they also begin holding themselves accountable for their behavior and their performance. This is the start of developing self-discipline.
What is Focus
Focus is the ability to pay careful attention to a specific task. This involves being able to tune out distractions or less important priorities until the task is successfully completed.
How KFMA Teaches Self Discipline and Improves Focus
Students learn to focus in a variety of ways during their training, starting with their attention being directed toward their instructor and towards their partners during the structured drills. Everyday distractions of life are left behind when the student walks onto the training floor, and the pace of the class and workout require the student to pay attention to the details presented during the training and instruction.
Target Works Improves Focus
During their training sessions, students will work with a variety of targets, and the key reason for using targets is to allow them to work hard and safely with a partner. The use of large body shields facilitates working safely on developing power, while smaller targets allow students to develop focus with their accuracy, and then with the additional element of speed.
Traditional Martial Arts Forms at KFMA Improve Focus
As students progress through the ranks, they will begin to memorize and learn forms (patterns of movement, similar to a dance routine but with powerful, martial arts techniques), and these will grow in length and complexity as the students move up in rank. Studies have shown that the practice of forms challenges both sides of the brain, working the creative and analytical sides of thinking. Memorizing the forms continues to develop self-discipline, and performing them with powerful techniques at the proper target heights further enhances focus.
KFMA Teaches Self-Discipline and Improves Focus – But What are the Benefits?
Now that you have a basic understanding of how KFMA teaches Self-Discipline and improves Focus, let’s take a look at the benefits of these life skills. From an academic standpoint, these benefits are fairly obvious. Students with self-discipline will hold themselves to task when studying and doing their homework, and students with better focus will increase the efficiency with which they study as they will be better able to avoid distractions.
From a professional perspective, any employer will vouch for the increased value of an employee who has already mastered self-discipline and can stay focused on a task, versus an employee who requires constant direction and supervision.
