KFMA CURRICULUM VIDEOS FOR TRAINING AT HOME — JANUARY TO APRIL 2025

As we begin a new year, our testing curriculum cycles are reset. The videos below will be helpful for all of our White through Red belts who wish to practice their material at home to prepare for the Rank Testings in February and April.

The videos below are broken out by rank groups as follows:

*White Belts

* Orange and Yellow Belts

* Camo, Green and Purple Belts

*Blue, Brown and Red Belts

Just a reminder, that before you start practicing with the videos, you should make sure you understand the techniques as taught by your Certified Master Instructors in class. This will enable you to perform them properly as you start to build muscle memory.

Tips on Practicing

For your basic hand techniques, you will want to focus on the beginning and ending position of each technique, as well as the direction of the block or strike. You should also note the proper positioning of the hand (tight fingers, straight wrists, etc).

When practicing kicks, you’ll want to play close attention to pivoting (keeps your knee safe), the proper chamber of the kicks, and to strike with the correct part of the foot (instep, heel, ball). The quality of the technique must be developed first, and then you can work on speed and power.

When you work on your stances, there are three elements to consider: first is the proper foot position, second if the weight shift, and third is proper body alignment. For a quick review of the basic stances, please see this article: https://teamkowkabany.com/practicing-traditional-karate-stances/

The first stripe you will earn at each belt will be for performing the sparring combinations, so that is a great place to start with practicing at home. The goal of the combinations is to develop smooth and fluid techniques, similar to what you would use in actual free sparring.

When you are ready to practice your Songahm forms, as you develop memorization of the patterns, your primary focus should be on the quality of the stances and techniques.

Ideally, with enough practice and effort, every form should demonstrate the following attributes: Proper Technique, Memorization, Power, Timing (hand-foot), Speed (on individual techniques, not doing the form ‘fast’), Balance, Eye Contact/Focus, Intensity and Rhythm/Fluidity.

As we’ve mentioned in class, please do not practice material above your rank. The forms and techniques were designed to build on the physical foundations developed over time. As always, should you have any questions, please ask your instructor.
