The “Butterfly Kick” of Taekwondo

Traditional Songahm Taekwondo has always been known for having beautiful, yet powerful, advanced kicks, many of which are not found in other martial arts. The ‘Butterfly Kick of Taekwondo,’ which is also known as a step jump reverse inner crescent kick, is certainly one of the most popular kicks, especially among younger students of the martial arts. This kick is also frequently performed using a round kick, instead of a crescent kick.

To learn and develop this kick would be extremely challenging from simply reading a few lines in an article and watching a brief tutorial. However, for those who have already learned the basics of the traditional Taekwondo kicks from a Certified Instructor, seeing this kick performed in a video may prove helpful. By watching the KFMA Black Belts in the four videos below, you can work on the visualization of the technique, making it easier to master when you practice physically in the dojang. With enough practice, the Butterfly Kick of Taekwondo may easily become your favorite!

Here’s a quick snapshot of the rotation and action of this kick taken right before contact is made with the target. Notice the last part of the execution is the extension of the foot!

While the jumping and spinning kicks of traditional Songahm Taekwondo are fun to perform and beautiful to watch, every kick begins with mastering the basics of the technique in its simplest form. For detailed info on how to develop a perfect and powerful Taekwondo side kick (quite possibly the most powerful kick in all of the martial arts), take a look at this article: https://teamkowkabany.com/how-to-develop-a-powerful-side-kick/
