KFMA STUDENT TRAINING – JANUARY – APRIL 2024 – VIDEOS FOR COLOR BELTS
The following collection of training videos is designed to help our Color Belt students (White through Red Belts) practice their material at home to better prepare for the Rank Testings to be held in February and April.
The videos below are broken out by rank groups as follows:
*White Belts
* Orange and Yellow Belts
* Camo, Green and Purple Belts
*Blue, Brown and Red Belts
First and foremost, please learn your basic techniques, stances and kicks in class from your Certified Master Instructor before you begin practicing with the videos. This will ensure that you are doing the techniques properly before you start working on developing muscle memory.
When practicing your hand techniques, it’s important to understand the starting and ending position of each movement, as well as proper finger placement and the direction of the strike or block. For kicks, make sure you understand how to pivot, as well as how to properly chamber the kick to strike with the correct part of the foot. If you practice incorrectly, having to relearn a technique will slow your progression. The quality of the techniques is paramount, then we can work on speed and power in execution. If you have a question, please ask!
Assuming you understand the basics of your techniques, then you should start working on your sparring combinations. The goal of practicing the combinations is to develop smooth and fluid techniques, similar to what you would use in actual free sparring. For practicing forms, the main focus is the QUALITY of the techniques and stances, including proper loads and chambers, correct foot position and weight shift, and eventually hand-foot timing and focus on the proper target.
The Songahm forms we use are longer than most traditional forms; however, they were designed to allow you to practice the strikes, blocks and kicks that you should be learning at each rank. Once you have memorized the pattern and can go through it smoothly, then you can focus on smooth transitions between each segment, and finally, add in the intensity that makes a form look testing-ready!
Please DO NOT practice material above your rank, as the techniques build upon each other over time. If you have questions about specific techniques or material, please ask your instructor.
